PINE AND SHIELD

Original Massachusetts Flags Handmade in New England

Discover the Pine and Shield

The reverse of the flag of Massachusetts once featured a green eastern white pine tree on a blue shield. This simple and distinctive design was removed in 1971 in favor of the state seal, resulting in the double-sided flag we know today.

Many states, including Massachusetts, are starting to rethink their flags and taking a particular interest in vintage flags that are all but lost to history. It’s a good time to ask whether the pine and shield has a future today.

Maine Flag Company – your friends to the north – are proud to offer a handcrafted version of the pine and shield. All our flags are cut and sewn in New England at our Portland microfactory. We’ve been manufacturing in New England since 2013.
